I’m glad you’ve found us! Let me introduce myself. My name is Heather. I have been married to a funny, intelligent, and handsome man, named Keith, for 18 years. A little over six years ago, we were surprised with an “at birth” (actually several hours later) diagnosis of Down syndrome for our brand new baby girl, Sadie. I won’t go into the whole story during this blog post, but I will say that I felt very lost and alone. I looked for similar families to connect with in Tallahassee and, while there were educational organizations, I didn’t find the personal connection, support, and shared experience that I needed. A few years later, my very good friend, Jenna, and her husband, Josh, had a similar experience and diagnosis with her sweet daughter, Violet. After talking, comforting, and learning from each other, we decided that more people could benefit from the kind of opportunity for relationship and support that we had been for each other, particularly with issues surrounding world of Down syndrome that were so new to both of us. We wanted to create a community of families touched by Trisomy 21 and a safe place for people to express their feelings, explore questions, and create a bond. We are very real people in this group and know that the road we travel is not always filled with sunshine and rainbows. We want to share the good and the bad with you and be with you during times of joy as well as frustration. We would love to get to know you and be a support to you along your journey with Down syndrome!
